British royal insignia: Tudor rose symbolizes unity

Date£º2022/9/23

In the English garden, there are many kinds of roses. The name of many roses is unknown to the British, but the most famous one is Tudor Rose, which does not exist in nature. This kind of rose in the traditional sign of England, with red petals wrapped in white petals, and a spiny flower stem attached below. Its name comes from the Tudor Dynasty. In addition to the royal scepter, Tudor roses also appear on the royal insignia, British passports, military uniforms, and even 20p coins. The Tudor rose petal bearing the crown bears the memory of many dynasties.

In the 15th century, the civil war in England, known as the "Rose War", resulted in the death of 1/3 of England's senior nobles, and nearly all the men of Lancaster and York royal families. Henry VII (Henry Tudor), whose mother was from Lancaster family, won the throne and married Elizabeth of York family. The "Rose War" between the Lancaster family whose family crest is red rose and the York family whose family crest is white rose finally ended. Henry Tudor combined the white rose of the York family with the red rose of the Lancaster family to produce the Tudor rose badge.

The most common style of Tudor rose is a two-color rose with white top and red bottom. The coat of arms of Tudor roses also has the pattern of "subtracting branches and stems and combining them with the crown", that is, roses with stems and leaves under the crown. This style appeared in Nicholas Hilliard's portraits of Queen Elizabeth I. "Tudor rose" pattern often appears in the portrait of Queen Elizabeth I to indicate that she belongs to Tudor dynasty. She is also often called the "Red Rose of Tudor Family" - bravely facing difficulties and creating beautiful brilliance.

Tudor roses were also designed in such a way that red and white roses were arranged vertically, or half of them were separated from another badge to form a new badge. Emblem patterns are intended to highlight national unity and ethnic unity. The British hope that no matter what kind of roses, they can play a role in uniting ethnic groups, rather than killing.

The Rose War, which marked the complete decline of the medieval chivalry, also inspired writers. Because of Tudor Rose, a series of historical plays by William Shakespeare came into being.

As the "Rose War", which lasted for 30 years, is often carried on the screen by the British people, and the British people of different ages are familiar with this history and the meaning of roses, we are also happy to see that England uses Tudor roses as the eye-catching logo in its external publicity. In addition, it can be seen on the logo of the England Tourist Board and the guard uniform of the Tower of London.
